Family Guidelines: By MPAA standards, this
deserves its R rating, but there's absolutely
no sexuality. Probably appropriate for mature
young teens. The film contains action violence
and gore (in a very humorous context) and some
language.
Have you ever talked to someone who didn't like
Shaun of the Dead? Of course you haven't.
And you'll never meet anyone who doesn't like Hot
Fuzz, the new action-packed comedy from the
creators of Shaun of the Dead.
The story of Hot Fuzz is much more complex than most
spoofs, but equally as silly. Nicholas Angel is
London's most prestigious cop. He has an arrest
rate 400% above the average officer and knows the
law like the back of his hand. His job is his life.
So, when he is transferred for being too bloody good
and making the other officers look bad, he is
devastated. Now he is to patrol a tiny countryside
town full of petty crime. However, after a few
weeks on the job, people of the town start to be
killed off one by one. So, with the help of his
action-movie-obsessed slob of a partner, Danny
Butterman, Nichols must find the killer before
there is no one left to victimize.
Pros: I see a lot of spoofs. Why? Well, I
hate to say it, but I'm a sucker for the Scary Movie
franchise. So, I always try to find something as
entertaining as them (of course that leads to me seeing
movies like Date Movie and Epic Movie. Yuck).
But, what was surprising about Hot Fuzz is that it
was actually a very smart satire. One of the things
I like about the Scary Movie and Naked Gun movies is
that it's obvious they love the movies they're parodying.
The same can be said about Hot Fuzz.
This movie is just plain funny. Period.
The performances by Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Jim
Broadbent are a ton of fun to watch. They really captured
the spirit of action movies, which only made it funnier.
Cons: While it was mostly funny, the film was
inconsistent at parts. One scene would be classic, the
other would be boring. By the end of the film, every
second was enjoyable, but it gets off on the wrong foot.

At 2 hours, the film is, like the movies it spoofs, too long.
While everything does turn out to be important by the conclusion
of the film, the action could have started earlier. Also, it
was a little self-indulgent at times.
Bottom Line: Hot Fuzz is a funny and very smart action-comedy.
If you're a fan of satire, you will absolutely love it.
Oscar Chances: It's possible that it could get a
Golden Globe Nomination for Best Actor in a Comedy (Simon
Pegg). Other than that, it's simply a funny film that
AMPAS will forget about.
