I'm still alive.
This year has been more than hectic for me mainly due to graduating college, moving twice, getting married, and trying to make money with my day job.
Anyway, the new project will be revealed FOR REAL on September 1. There will be a bountiful amount of changes, so be sure to check back and find out what they are.
Again, I apologize for my absence and I am looking forward to getting back into the swing of things.

Activity will return to Oscar Addict THIS WEEKEND with a review of Iron Man.
It will be the only *new* movie I have seen so far this year. I've seen a bountiful amount of older films for my various classes, however this has kept me from seeing the new stuff.
The new design and full coverage will arrive MONDAY, JUNE 9.
So stay tuned!

I apologize for the lack of activity around here. A combination of excessive busyness, lack of money, and a broken computer have kept me from updating this site. However, coming in May will be an all-new Oscar Addict complete with predictions, reviews, a new design, and MUCH more interactivity. Be sure to check back for updates.

So another movie year, and a great one at that, has come and gone. I had my fun, I made my picks, I shook my head as I watched my picks not win. As I mentioned I scored 15 out of 24 this year, which is 1 better than last year, but still lower than my 17 point average (my best year was 2005, where I went 18 for 24). Anyway, enough about 2007, let's move on to 2008.
First of all, I would like to remind everyone that Oscar Addict doesn't quit when it's not Oscar season, so keep coming back for reviews, news, and commentary all year round. This year I have some plans to make this the biggest year for Oscar Addict ever and I'm really excited.
This weekend I will have posted my year in advance predictions with 25 possibilities in all of the major categories (10 possibilities in the non-majors). I also expect to get started on some 2008 reviews as soon as possible. I haven't been present much at the movies so far this year, which is fine, because everyone knows the year doesn't begin until after the Oscars anyway. May is when it really gets going.
Here are some things you can expect from Oscar Addict this year:
1) Monthly updated Oscar predictions until October when they become bi-monthly.
2) New reviews at least every week or every other week.
3) More non-Oscar film coverage such as tributes to great films in history.
4) A new design with more interactive stuff.
AND...
5) The thing I'm working on that I am most excited about for next Oscar season is a huge Awards contest where you can predict the winners for all the big awards (Oscars, Golden Globes, BAFTAs, Critics' Choice, guilds, etc.) and keep a running tally throughout the season culminating with a big prize the day after the Oscars. If everything works like I have envisioned it there will be a live updating scoreboard anytime there is an award given out and you can log in and change your picks as the season goes along. It takes some hardcore PHP programming that I am currently experimenting with, but I imagine it will all be done by next season.
So, thanks for supporting this site and keep the discussion going. If there are any suggestions that you have for the site this year, please shoot me an e-mail: Alex@oscaraddict.com.
Also, please keep this site going by clicking on the ads to the right occasionally. ----------->>>>

Here's to a great 2008!
Monday, February 25 2008 - 10:46 AM

It was a great year for movies that culminated with an enjoyable Oscar ceremony. I don't think there were any lasting memories made last night, but it was enjoyable nonetheless. Here are my highlights from the show:
Best Acceptance Speech
Marion Cotillard - BEST ACTRESS
Her enthusiasm was infectious. Her French accent combined with her childlike excitement made her just plain adorable. It was a well-deserved win.
Biggest Surprise
The Bourne Ultimatum for SOUND MIXING, SOUND EDITING, and FILM EDITING
Who would have thought that this summer blockbuster would do so well in the tech categories, winning in all three categories that it was nominated. I think an even bigger surprise might be that Transformers was completely shut out.
Biggest Snub
Transformers for SOUND MIXING
The sound mixing team of Kevin O'Connell and Greg P. Russell somehow got shut out again, making them a combined 0 for 32. They really are the two most overdue men in Hollywood. Hopefully the Academy does not have to resort to a Lifetime Achievement Oscar.

Most Satisfying Win
Glen Hansard and Marketa Iglova - ORIGINAL SONG
They truly were dynamic on stage together. I loved Glen's awestruck and humble acceptance speech and John Stewart's response - "Wow, that guy is arrogant." Great move by the Academy letting Marketa come out and give her acceptance speech after initially cutting her off. They both had very inspiring and humble things to say. In my opinion their performance and win were the best moments of the night.
Worst Move by the Producers
Showing montages of every great acceptance speech throughout history right before giving out a particular award, so that whoever is about to win will look inadequate in comparison. I don't blame the Coen brothers for just saying their thanks and getting off.
Best Presenter
Most Awkward Moment
Amy Adams performing "Happy Working Song" alone on stage. Why would they take Giselle's world away from her?
What were the best moments in your opinion?

Here we go. It is finally the time that we all have been waiting for. I will be posting live updates and commentary throughout the Oscar ceremony. I wouldn't call it live blogging, because I'm not as devoted as some bloggers out there, but I will be updating the winners and posting my reactions on this thread. So keep checking back for updates as the night goes on. Below is a recap of my predictions.
10:46 PM: There it is. Exactly like everybody expected. I went 15 for 24 on my predictions. Good show. Check back for more recap tomorrow.
10:37 PM: Daniel Day-Lewis wins. No big surprises yet. A few disappointments. A few shoulder shrugs. But nothing that made me do a double take.
10:04 PM: Good In Memoriam piece. Antonioni, Bergman, and Heath Ledger. We lost some good ones this year.
9:51 PM: YAY! "Once" took the prize home! I can stop watching now, that was all I cared about. Great awestruck speech, Glen.
9:19 PM: Glen Hansard and Marketa Iglova. The moment I've been waiting for all night. LOVE this song. That was gorgeous. I am glad Glen used the guitar with the hole in it from the movie.
9:15 PM: Great acceptance speech by Marion. Her excitement is infectious.
9:07 PM: NOOO! Kevin O'Connell and Greg P. Russell got completely robbed again. I'm sorry guys. The blog world was pulling for you.
8:54 PM Kristin Chenoweth is great. I hope James Marsden appears.
8:49 PM The first acceptance speech by the Coens tonight. Did NCFOM just win the Oscar?
8:39 PM: Tilda Swinton wins. Have any Americans won an Oscar yet? Wait, Brad Bird. And the guys from "Golden Compass."
8:33 PM: That's what I get for changing my picks at the last minute. "Peter and the Wolf" won after all. At least I got Live Action right, but I continue to be 50/50.
8:19 PM: For those of you who don't know Spanish Javier said "This is for you mother, and for grandmother, and for her mother, and for every person in Spain"...and something about showing that the Spanish are fine actors. Way to go, Javier.
8:14 PM: Wow, I am sucking at my predictions. Let's hope things turn around from here on out.
8:02 PM: I love Amy Adams, but I was hoping for more spectacle with "Happy Working" song. Especially considering how fun it was in the movie. Oh well, good job.
7:58 PM: Wow, they really are not letting people's speeches go long at all.
7:41 PM: Stewarts opening monologue was mildly entertaining. I mostly liked the cuts to Bardem with Tommy Lee Jones scowling in the background.
7:30 PM: Here we go. Regis passes things on to John Stewart.
7:28 PM CST: I'm super excited to see all of the costumes from "That's How You Know" will be appearing on stage for the production.
I went 15 for 24.

Best Supporting Actress
Cate Blanchett - I'm Not There
The readers have spoken. I was considering changing my supporting actress prediction, but according to the poll that has been up for the past couple of days 39% of you believe Cate Blanchett will pull off the win, with 25% of you going for Tilda Swinton. Amy Ryan and Ruby Dee came in close for third and fourth and Saiorse Ronan lingered behind in 5th place with only 5% of the votes. Therefore, I will be sticking to my original prediction and choose Cate Blanchett for my final predictions.
Best Editing
The Bourne Ultimatum
I originally had No Country for Old Men simply because of all the momentum that the film had been gaining. However, The Bourne Ultimatum seems to have the most support of people who know a thing or two about editing (the ACE) and therefore, it gets my pick.
Best Animated Short
I Met the Walrus
I don't know anything about this category, but my original prediction Peter and the Wolf is apparently not that strong. My new prediction seems to have a lot of acclaim headed its way and an original concept, so there ya go.
Best Documentary Short
Freeheld
I've heard this film's name more than any of the others as of late, I guess that means it is pretty good. Really this is more of a hunch than anything, though.

Best Picture
WINNER: No Country for Old Men
Best Director
WINNER: Ethan and Joel Coen - No Country for Old Men
You can't stop what's coming. The phenomenal movie season of 2007 comes to its end tomorrow night with the most prestigious awards ceremony in the world. With all of the great cinematic offerings of last year, one film continues to stand head and shoulders above the rest. The soon to be legendary directing, writing, producing, and editing team of Ethan and Joel Coen have reached a level of critical and awards recognition that is only received by the greatest of filmmakers. No Country for Old Men is a phenomenal film. It grabs you with its heart-stopping suspense, blows you away with its phenomenal ensemble of actors, and expertly tackles some psychological and philosophical issues. When the Coens take home the directing prize and the best picture prize tomorrow night it will be a great peak to an already phenomenal career.
Best Picture
ALTERNATE: Michael Clayton
It has a lot of fans in the Academy, and 6 nominations in the big 8 categories, the most of any film. This usually bodes well.
Best Director
ALTERNATE: Julian Schnabel - The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
He has been praised left and right for the beautiful film that has a lot of support, but the movie missed out on Best Picture, which usually raises flags.
Tomorrow: Recap all predictions.
